Ed-Media Notes 2

Authors:Lanika Ruzhitskaya, University of Missouri, USAAngela Speck, University of Missouri, USA
Abstract:While virtual learning environments (VLEs) are popular topics of discussions among researchers, the educational value of the environments is still not clear and the efficacy of such environments as educational tools is still largely untested. Many researchers share concerns as to whether VLEs actually simulate authentic settings, provide users with adequate to real-life tools, and allow learning to occur through the experience, rather than simply providing an enjoyable journey through fantasy worlds. One of the aspects of ongoing research of the VLEs is use of spatial and social presence and their impact on learning. The proposed exploratory study will investigate the effectiveness of social and spatial presence co-variation in terms of their combined and individual impact on short and long term learning outcomes. The study will be based on a 3D VLE representing the Galilean Moons of Jupiter designed for helping high-school and college students to learn the Kepler’s laws.

Abstract:The paper is an exploration of the ‘magic’ inherent in role-play simulations in educational contexts. It compares and analyses a range of on-line role-play simulations used in higher education in a variety of disciplines highlighting the structural design and objectives of such role-play games, and in particular, it scrutinizes the game design principles that have been employed. As part of the new generation of educational technologies the use of such role-play is steadily increasing but very few guidelines exist as to how to translate educational goals and desired outcomes into game objectives and processes. Our paper provides a few such guidelines born out of the research and experience of creating such games.

Sick at South Shore Beach

James Mathews, University of Wisconsin, USA
Abstract:Recent research on Augmented Reality (AR) gaming suggests that place-based AR games embedded in larger curricular units provide contexts, experiences and scaffolding that help develops students’ understanding of domain specific language in science. Using a socio-cultural view of learning, this project explores the potential of one specific place-based AR gaming unit, Sick at South Shore Beach, to develop students’ academic language related to environmental science and scientific argumentation. It examines specific game design features aimed at facilitating scientific language development and discusses how lessons learned during classroom implementations will be used to inform future AR designs.

GAM- Game Model

Playing Games: Hegemony as Enemy by Alan Amory, University of Johannesburg, South Africa
Many argue that the three most influential writers today are Umberto Eco, Richard Dawkins and Noam Chomsky. In Dreaming in the Middle Ages, Eco defines the phenomena of neomedievalism to confront pop-culture in a globalised corporate world – the language and structures of the past are perpetuated into a future where fiefdoms exploit and undermine civil society. Dawkins, on the other hand uses signs and symbols of science to explore and decry the rise of fundamentalist belief systems. Chomsky, who was involved in the development of cognitive science when he challenged Skinner's behaviourist approach to the study of language, continues to explore power relations especially those related to American politics. Therefore modern fiefdoms perpetuate fundamentalism through capitalistic and religious power structures. Are the relationships between educational technology, society and teaching and learning, which are part of Eco-Dawkins-Chomsky world view, perpetuating the past into the future? This presentation explores the design, development, use and evaluation of educational technology in relationship to belief systems to identify the rhetorical acts that are part of the dialectic struggle to liberalise and democratise educational practices.

Vienna Day, June 30, 2008

My daughter and I stayed in a Wombat Hostel last night. We figured out the metro/ underground station to come to the conference area.

One amazing thing! You can register for 1 euro to a bike station and use the bike around the city. First hour is free and you can return and take the bike again from any listed location. As long as you return within an hour, it is free. The bikes were a bit big for my daughter. We will try again tomorrow.

My skype is on today and I am waiting to hear from PT4T students at WPUNJ. Peace, MNY
